  Under the direction of the SPD Manager, the SPD Coordinator will be responsible for the daily operations of SPD. The SPD Coordinator will assist the SPD Manager in assessing the OR schedule to set daily priorities and prepare work assignments for the SPD staff. Supervises the decontamination, processing, assembly, sterilization and distribution of all instruments, equipment and supplies. Responsible for development, planning, implementation and coordination of orientation, continuing education, and cross training of staff within the SPD department. Works closely with internal customers and other stakeholders to streamline workflow using process innovation techniques. The Sterile Processing department at Greenwich Hospital works to promote sterility assurance and guides health care personnel in the proper use of processing instruments and equipment for use throughout the facility. SPD is a dynamic, fast-paced, ever changing environment and presents the opportunity to interact with all departments throughout the hospital. Included within the scope of the recommended practice are functional and physical design criteria for sterilization processing areas (decontamination, preparation, sterilization, and sterile storage areas), staff qualifications, and continuous education and personnel considerations, processing procedures; the installation, care, and maintenance of steam sterilizers and all mechanics/equipment utilized in SPD; quality control; and quality process improvement. Our SPD technicians are 100% certified.

  • 1.--Prepare daily work assignments
  • 2.--Sets and coordinates daily priorities according to the needs of the OR schedules.
  • 3.--Communicates with OR Control Desk Coordinator to meet the needs of the OR schedule
  • 4.--Work with the SPD Case Cart Assembly Professional RN with ensuring accurate complete case carts.
  • 5.--Assist the OR Service Section Heads with creating, revising and maintaining instrument inventory. Also assists in making edits to the PICIS worksheets.
  • 6.--Work with contract instrument vendor with cross referencing and repair replace program
  • 7.--Work with Materials Management with completing purchase requisitions
  • 8.--Ensures that all equipment is in good working order
  • 9.--Leads daily shift report
  • 10.--Help SPD Manager with development, revising and implantation of staff orientation and competencies
  • 11.--Complies with departmental plan to meet budget goals.
  • 12.--Attends OR 0700 shift report
  • 13.--Accepts responsibilities within scope of practice.
  • 14.--Plans, develops and coordinates the orientation program for new staff members.
  • 15.--Performs ongoing assessments of the educational needs of the staff and facilitates training and education.
  • 16.--Establishes and monitors competence of staff by periodical inspections and observations of work performance.
  • 17.--Coordinates and/or actively participates in annual policy and procedure review and/or update. Qualifications EDUCATIONAssociates Degree required; BS or BSN preferred, Must possess a five years experience in the Operating Room and Sterile Processing Department.EXPERIENCEMinimum of 5 years of SPD supervisory, Charge, or Lead Tech experience in Central Sterile Processing or 5 years Operating Room experience as an RN with extensive knowledge of instrumentation, OR medical and surgical supplies and OR/CSS operations.LICENSUREMust be Certified through CBSPD or IAHCSMM.SPECIAL SKILLSMicrosoft Excel, Word processing, Data processing, Materials Management Information System, and E-Mail.PHYSICAL DEMANDMay be exposed Infectious diseases, cuts, and burns. Standing and walking 60% of the day. Sufficient mobility and strength to move throughout the department and lift heavy items. Pushing and Pulling Case Carts.
